Jewelry of Bali

The village of Celuk, located in between Batubulan and Sukawati, less than an hour away from Denpasar, has evolved into the center of silver and gold jewelry making. Much like the watch making industry in Switzerland, the trade of silver and gold jewelry has become home industry to practically everybody in Celuk. The trade that was started by a small number of Pande (smith) clans has permeated everybody in Celuk, with every home in the village has a small silver and gold production studios.

The silver and gold products that they make are quite wide, ranging from earrings, necklaces, pendants, brooches, rings, bracelets, and other accessories. Here, as in other artistic creations of the Balinese, their cultural heritage distinctively mark their creations. Intricate patterns similar to that found in batik become the center theme of a large hair pin, worn by women for certain ceremonies. Silver bracelets or rings model the snakes that guard the Temple of Tanah Lot. Nature and culture find another manifestation in the silver and gold artistry of the Balinese.

The road from Batubulan to Celuk to Sukawati is lined with dozens of galleries and shops, displaying many kinds of silver and gold jewelry and crafts. Stop by, and if you can't find exactly what you are looking for, ask for it. The gallery owner will happily go back to his studio to create the piece of your desire.
